The work of repairing the old bridge across the Tunga near Bekkinakalmutt Circle in the city along National Highway 69, where minor cracks were noticed recently, commenced on Sunday.
It may be mentioned here that, on August 9, minor cracks were noticed on the surface of the bridge owing to which traffic was halted. The bridge is 294 metres long.
Harish, Assistant Executive Engineer of Public Works Department, has said that the cracks appeared only on superficial level of the bituminous layer and there was no threat to the stability of the bridge.
The concrete slabs and the pillars of the bridge were intact.
It has been planned to cut open the bituminous layer and lay a new layer of bitumen and concrete.
