Serious allegations have been made against a West Australian policeman who caused a four-car pile-up while allegedly intoxicated near Perth Airport.

The officer was off-duty when he crashed into a vehicle on Airport Drive on Friday night, sparking a chain reaction.

The officer allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.05, Nine News reported.  

In a statement on Saturday, police said a passenger in one of the vehicles suffered serious back injuries.

The officer was stood down from all operational duties pending the outcome of an investigation by the major crash and internal affairs units.

'From what I've been briefed, there are serious allegations - that's why the officer has been stood down,' Police Commissioner Chris Dawson told Nine News on Monday.

'I think it's likely that charges may flow but I don't want to pre-empt any more than that.'
