BENGALURU: A recklessly
driven MUV with a drunk man at the wheel ploughed through a row of two-wheelers parked by the roadside, climbed a pavement and hit at least eight pedestrians before grinding to a halt at 17th Cross, HSR Layout Sector VII, on Sunday afternoon.
The six two-wheelers that the Mahindra Xylo first hit slowed down the MUV. If not for that, injuries to the pedestrians could have been severe and it could have led to fatalities too, eyewitnesses said.
The incident occurred at 3pm when a group of people were sipping tea outside Reddy restaurant. A few others were walking on the footpath outside the restaurant.
Suddenly, the speeding yellowboard cab veered off the road, hit the two-wheelers and the men and women in front of the restaurant.
Passersby caught hold of the driver, Rajendra, a resident of Kothanur. He was driving a cab attached to a private company.
According to locals, HSR Layout traffic police reached the spot 40 minutes later to detain the driver. “The accused was drunk when the incident took place,” they confirmed.
The injured are Gaurav, 19; Shankar, 22; Mayura, 22; Gunapal, 36 and Aniketh, 19. “We have no clue about the injured women. We registered a case against the driver based on the complaint filed by Aniketh. Three of the five identified were treated as outpatients and two others were admitted to a private hospital,” a police officer said.
Shocking video goes viralCCTV footage of the incident from the restaurant and other adjacent buildings went viral on social media.
The footage from the restaurant shows a few people standing outside the hotel and having discussions over cups of tea. A few others, including three young woman, are seen walking on the footpath when the cab hits the two-wheelers parked on the roadside and climbs the footpath, hitting the pedestrians.
Sandeep Mittal, a resident, said he was inside his house next to the hotel when the incident occurred. “It was horrible. The MUV hit the parked vehicles first and that helped save many lives,” he said.
“I called the police control room. But they were asking me all sorts of questions like the vehicle number and details about the driver. Finally, I called the jurisdictional DCP (southeast division) and informed her about the incident. Traffic policemen reached the spot 40 minutes later,” Mittal said.
