34-year-old woman gets new lease of life at SGH

Pune: A team of surgeons at State government-run Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) in Pune successfully gave a new lease of life to a 34-year-old woman suffering from liver cancer. The patient, who hails from Ahmednagar district, was suffering from chronic pain in the abdomen since last three months and consulted many doctors with no relief. Later, the cancerous tumour was found to be 13 centimetres in size and was later removed surgically at the city-based hospital.

The woman was advised by private doctors to undertake a sonography. The sonography of the abdomen left her and her family devastated.

The report showed that there was a large mass on the right side of the liver, which pointed towards cancer. Further reports proved that it was indeed cancer.

The patient’s family consulted private doctors where they advised surgery to remove the tumour. 

Officials from SGH noted that as it was a complex and critical surgery. The family hearing upon the liver transplant programme at Sassoon hospital came with a hope of curative treatment. They consulted a surgical OPD with Dr Kamlesh Bokil and Dr Santosh Thorat.

“Upon a thorough clinical examination, they advised them to get admitted and explained further need for investigations. Investigations were carried out under the guidance of Hepatologist Dr Sheetal Mahajani and a decision was taken to go for the right hepatectomy. Hepatectomy is the surgical resection (removal of all or part) of the liver,” said officials from SGH.

The procedure at the government run hospital was carried out with state-of-the-art instruments and gadgets at the main operation theatre by the team of Dr Bipin Vibhute, Dr Kamlesh Bokil and Dr Santosh Thorat. 

The patient sustained the procedures very well and it was uneventful. The new improved infrastructure stands as a hope for patients from poor strata of the society.

In all the above procedures, Dean of BJ General Medical College (BJGMC) and Sassoon General Hospital (SGH), Dr SD Nanandkar, Dr Vandana Dube, HOD Surgery, Dr Vidya Kelkar, HOD Anaesthesia, Dr Manish Pathak, Transplant Anaesthetic, Dr Suraj Jadhavar, Dr Harish Tatya, Rahul Tambe, Organ Co-ordinator played a vital role along with the support of OT staff, OT in-charge Dindal Anita, Ahire Sunita, staff sister Swati Doiphode and staff sister Tarka Raut.
