McLaren 600LT Sets A Storming 7:08.8 Lap Around The Nurburgring

The McLaren 600LT is one of the finest vehicles built by the British car manufacturer and, as you can see in the following video, one of its fastest around a circuit as well.

Sport Auto were handed the keys to an aqua-colored 600LT back in early June and lapped the Nurburgring at furious speeds in the most lightweight and track-focused Sports Series. The LT set a blistering lap time of 7:08.82, making it the fastest recorded (and published) time for a McLaren around the German circuit (excluding the P1 LM).

While Woking churns out some of the market’s fastest supercars and hypercars, it hasn’t followed in the footsteps of rivals Porsche and Lamborghini in chasing Nurburgring records. McLaren famously said the P1 could lap the Nordschleife in under 7 minutes, but has declined to publish a time, leading many to believe it couldn’t match the 6:57 set by the Porsche 918 Spyder.

If, however, they were telling the truth, that would make the 600LT around 10 seconds slower around the ‘Ring than the hybridized and much more powerful (and expensive) P1.

Either way, its lap puts the 600LT in an elite club. The fastest rear-wheel drive car around the circuit is the Porsche 911 GT2 RS with a 6:47.25, followed by the 6:56.4 of the 911 GT3 RS, although those runs were recorded during manufacturer conducted tests and not independents. In comparison, the best Sport Auto could muster out of the GT3 RS was a 7:05.41, which could mean that the Macca is actually much closer than one might think.
