It will cover all major rivers in Kozhikode

The district-level disaster management authority has decided to conduct a sand audit covering all major rivers in Kozhikode.

Officials said it would be the first such attempt to unearth encroachments on river banks and evacuate them at the earliest.

Tahsildars and engineers from the Irrigation Department will be responsible for completing the process in time. Besides, geologists will inspect all granite quarries to ascertain whether their operations are lawful.

Expert panel

A separate committee of experts will be formed to check soil conservation activities in landslip-prone areas. It will submit a report to the District Collector on the immediate measures to be taken. Officials said disaster management activities would be streamlined at the village level. Suggestions were also sought from experts to streamline the weather alert system that predicts landslips and heavy rain.
