CHENNAI: A five-year-old
girl died in the wee hours of Sunday at Kundrathur after a portion of a
compound wall collapsed on a tent inside which the girl was sleeping with her parents. Her parents escaped with minor injuries.
Police have arrested two
earthmover operators in connection with the incident.
Police said the girl, Masani, belonged to a gypsy community. Her parents — Mohan and Pushpa — prepared hair strands and sold assortment at traffic signals. They lived in the shanty that was put up on the pavement off
Porur-Kundrathur Road.
The incident happened around 2.30am on Sunday when it was raining heavily in the locality. An earthmover that was filling a pit after pipes were laid hit the wall and it fell to the other side where Mohan had made his hut.
Masani and Pushpa were stuck under the debris. They were rescued by Mohan and a few neighbours. A bleeding Masani was rushed to the Chromepet government hospital where doctors declared her ‘brought dead’. Pushpa who sustained injuries on her legs has been admitted for treatment. The couple have another child who escaped unhurt.
Based on a complaint from Mohan, the Kundrathur police arrested earthmover operators Iyyappan, 27, a resident of Poonamallee, and Uthiravel, 29, a resident of Kundrathur. They were produced before a court that remanded them in judicial custody.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the earthmover had been deployed by the Metrowater on contract to lay underground pipelines to transfer third-grade treated sewage from Koyambedu to Hyundai’s plant at Irungattukottai near Sriperumpudur.
Police said about seven families, all from the same community, have been living in the area for the past three decades.
