MUMBAI: An elderly couple ended up losing Rs 70,000 after they sought help from a young man to withdraw cash at an ATM in Vasai.
The image of the man who helped the couple has been captured on the closed circuit television (CCTV) of the ATM. The incident took place on Wednesday.
The couple, Murlidhar Rokade (65) and his wife Sudha (60), went to the ATM to withdraw cash. The suspect was already at the kiosk and had withdrawn cash when he offered to help the couple.
He first asked the couple to use the debit card and check the balance. The suspect waited behind them and watched Rokade key in the card PIN. He then took the card from Sudha, exchanged it with an outdated debit card, inserted it in the ATM and told the couple that the card was non-functional and gave it to them. The action was captured on CCTV.

Even as the couple stood in the kiosk and wondered why they could not withdraw money, Rokade received three SMSes of withdrawals of Rs 40,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000. These were done from another ATM nearby.
A case of cheating has been registered against the accused. His accomplice was also captured on CCTV. The bank has shared the footage with the police.
