CHANDIGARH: A person has been arrested for allegedly stealing batteries from vehicles parked at the Punjab and Haryana high court and Civil Secretariat, the police said on Saturday.
The accused identified as Sushil Kumar, 30, a resident of Kharar was produced before a local court that sent him to two-day police custody for further interrogation.
According to the police, in order to deceive people, Sushil used to act as a delivery executive of
Zomato, an online food aggregator and keep the stolen batteries in the
food delivery bag.
In view of spate of battery thefts from two-wheelers from parking lots near high court, civil secretariat, Kendriya Sadan, the police constituted a team to nab the accused. The cops recovered 31 stolen batteries from the possession of the accused.
Based on a tip-off, cops laid a checkpoint near Rock Garden on Friday night to nab the accused. His motorcycle was also seized by the cops. On his statement, cops recovered 31 stolen batteries from his possession and claimed to have solved seven cases of battery thefts registered at Sector 3 police station.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that he targeted bullet motorcycles and used to steal around 12-14 batteries within an hour from the parking lots of the city. The accused used to sell the stolen batteries to street vendors at vegetable markets, cops said.
Police added that Sushil is a drug addict and to fulfil his drug needs, he committed thefts in the city. Sushil worked as a waiter in a tavern in Kharar. Further investigation is on as the cops are hoping to solve more theft cases.
