Mumbai: Puppy gulps shaving blade, undergoes operation

Four-month-old Rocky, who had a close shave, with Amey
MUMBAI: A puppy underwent a surgery to remove a shaving blade that was lodged in its tummy. The male Golden Retriever, pet to a family in Charkop, had gulped the blade that had been chucked into the bin of their row house.
On Wednesday, the 4-month-old pup, Rocky, passed bloodshot stools and threw up twice with traces of blood in the vomit. “Until then, he was his usual active self, bouncing around the house,” said Amey Deorukhkar, an animation software instructor. On Wednesday, his wife Rajshri took him to the vet who got an X-ray done and administered saline.
The X-ray showed metal lodged in its tummy, said Dr Pradnya Pethe, a veterinary surgeon at Canids Veterinary Centre at Borivli. A day later, when the couple took Rocky to the clinic, Amey, who took a long hard look at the X-ray film knew what it was.
“It was the shaving blade I use in my vastaraa [razor],” he said, adding that he had discarded one a day before Rocky was taken ill. Amey said he uses the conventional razor, like those often used in salons, in which a blade is split into two and one half used at a time.

A day later, the vomiting and stools had subsided, but the blade could have caused much damage to the canine’s innards, said Dr Pethe who carried out the gastrotomy. This is a medical procedure in which the stomach had to be opened by making a slight incision to bring the blade out. “If the blade were to remain lodged inside, it could have perforated or ripped into the puppy’s stomach and liver,” Dr Pethe told TOI.
Amey said he appreciates the prompt diagnosis and surgical removal of the blade. Rocky is is “much better” and looks active and alert, getting back to his tricks, said Amey who has kept a pet for the first time. “This has taught us to dispose of such sharp objects more carefully and to keep bins away from a pet’s reach,” he said. “After all, having a pet in the house is pretty much like having a baby around the place.”
