Amrita University (Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham) has found a place in the University Grants Commission’s list of Institutions of Eminence.
A release from the University stated that the University was one among the 10 private institutions to find a place in the list that had well-known institutions like Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, and VIT, Vellore.
The UGC had another list of public institutions as well.
No financial support
The release also said that for private institutions with the Institution of Eminence tag, there would be no financial support from the UGC, but they would be entitled for more autonomy as special category deemed universities.
University Vice-Chancellor P.Venkat Rangan said it was an honour for the institution as it was one of the youngest and fastest growing private deemed universities to find a place in the list.

The release further said UGC expected the Institutions of Eminence to have certain features that included highly qualified faculty with expertise to hire from across the globe, excellence in research, inter-disciplinary courses, including in areas of emerging technology, academic, administrative and financial autonomy, and significant proportion of international students.
