MADURAI: A five-member gang murdered a teashop owner in Madurai on Saturday after he reprimanded them for teasing a girl.
The deceased has been identified as S Marimuthu, 42, of Krishnapuram Colony in Madurai. He had been running a teashop in the locality for seven years. According to police, the youths used to sit near the teashop and create nuisance. Marimuthu and his wife Amutha had reprimanded them a few times earlier. On Friday, a schoolgirl who was passing by the shop fell down and the youths teased the girl. Marimuthu questioned them for it and chased them away. The youths returned around 5.45am on Saturday when Marimuthu had opened the shop and attacked him with soda bottles. One stabbed him on the neck with a knife and fled. Marimuthu died on the way to the hospital.
Police picked up one of the youths Veera Karthick. A search is on for the others.
