PUNE: A 32-year-old man from Dattawadi attacked a policeman from
Ahmednagar for refusing him the permission to offer food to his brother, Wasim Patel, languishing in the
jail for chain-snatching cases.
The incident happened outside the central prison at 3.15pm on Wednesday, when three policemen brought Patel from
Shrirampur sub-jail to Yerawada amid tight security because of his involvement in large number of chain-snatching cases in Pune, Ahmednagar and other places.
The policemen were escorting Patel to the prison gate when his brother, Asif, rushed to him with a tiffin box and a packet of bidi. He appealed to policemen to allow him give the food to his brother and permit him to smoke on humanitarian grounds, but they turned down his request.
Constable Harish Pansanval (30) from the Ahmedngar police said on Friday, "Asif had picked up arguments with the policemen after they refused to remove his brother's handcuff. He was told that such facility cannot be offered to a person in custody."
Pansanval said, "The Shrirampur police had taken action against Asif for bursting fire crackers outside the sub-jail here on the occasion of his brother's birthday. He developed a grudge that he was not allowed to meet his brother because of the said case. He threatened to bang his head against the prison wall."
The police said Asif was taken into custody and handed over to the Yerawada police. A case under sections 353 (obstructing public servant from discharging duty) and 332 (grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against him.
