As per the directions of the National Green Tribunal order, all stakeholders in the State are to immediately apply and obtain consent of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) for management of biomedical waste.

In a statement, the Tiruvannamalai Collector K.S. Kandasamy has said, “All stakeholders in Tamil Nadu shall immediately apply and obtain consent of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board under the Water (P and CP) Act, 1974.”

“Non-bedded occupiers shall apply and obtain one-time authorisation under Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016 without delay,” he added.

The Biomedical Waste Management amended rules have been notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in March 2016, wherein, the rule apply to all persons who generate, collect, receive, store, transport, treat, dispose, or handle bio-medical waste in any form including hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, dispensaries, veterinary institutions, animal houses, pathological laboratories, blood banks, Ayush hospitals and clinical establishments.

Research or educational institutions, health camps, medical or surgical camps, vaccination camps, blood donation camps, first aid rooms of schools, forensic laboratories and research labs are also included in the list of waste generators.
