Ford's Fiesta hatchback is incredibly popular among young motorists and is a staple of the brand's presence locally.  It's easy to see why; from the first day I received it on test, I was hooked.

It suits a millennial's lifestyle and turns many heads wherever you go; during July, Ford SA sold 257 Fiesta models, according to Naamsa's latest figures.

 The automatic 1.0-litre, 3 cylinders turbo-petrol unit has a smooth, yet incredibly responsive acceleration and the engine is barely audible when idling. The Fiesta fuel consumption claimed by its automaker is rated at 5.2L/100km though I found it a lot thirstier and averaged about 7.1-litres/100km.

Then again, my driving style is usually a bit more aggressive than most.The Fiesta faces tough rivals such as the Volkswagen Polo, Kia Rio, and Renault Clio.

On start-up, the Fiesta's LED trimmed daytime running headlights switches on automatically and light up and dim during cornering to aid illumination. A wider grille, with a chrome finish, gives this model its unique make-over.The interior of the Fiesta is a big improvement compared to the previous model. Its comfortable seats make the drive that much more enjoyable. Optional heatable seats add an ambience of luxury. Barely any unpleasant wind noise can be heard at moderate speeds nor any vibrations felt within the cabin making the drive pleasant for all occupants.

The Fiesta now has an enlarged glovebox and improved central storage that doubles as an armrest for the driver. The driver and passenger door mouldings have space for small bottles and there is a set of drink holders too. There's ample space along the front of the gear lever to store your phone and other kit.

The 8" touchscreen infotainment system has Bluetooth, navigation, and App-Connect.Other niceties include cruise control, climate control air-conditioning and rain-sensing windscreen wipers, a total of 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, electronic stability control with traction control, hill launch assist, and ISOFIX child seat mounts are standard. 

Space and knee room for the driver and passenger are more than expected, although legroom at the back may just be limited to tall people. Nonetheless, the luggage bay claims about 303 litres, and if you need to carry heavier, bulkier items, once the rear seats are folded down, there is 984 litres of space.

The Fiesta 1.0 Titanium automatic goes for about R310 600 with a 4-year or 120 000km warranty and a 4-year or 60 000 km service plan.
