In a major setback to ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, DMK's DM Kathir Anand on Friday won the Vellore Lok Sabha segment defeating his nearest rival by a margin of 8,000 votes.

With this win, the DMK-led alliance has bagged 38 of 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu. The election in Vellore was rescinded in April when the rest of the 38 seats in Tamil Nadu went for polls during general elections.

The EC had cancelled the poll in Vellore following the seizure of huge cash, allegedly from a person associated with DMK. The election was held on August 5 and the counting of votes was conducted on Friday.

AC Shanmugam of Puthiya Needhi Katchi, an AIADMK ally, polled 4,77,199 votes or 46.51% share of the total votes, the Election Commission announced.

Anand, son of DMK Treasurer Duraimurugan, received 4,85,340 votes and garnered a 47.3% vote share.

A polling percentage of 71.51 was recorded in Vellore Lok Sabha constituency which has 14.32 lakh voters.

The AIADMK had won the seat in 2014.

Anand said the victory due to hard work by the party workers.

"This victory due to our hard work. I will dedicate this victory to our leader," he said.

DMK chief MK Stalin thanked the voters for the victory.

With this win, the DMK's tally in Lok Sabha has now gone up to 24 and that of the alliance led by it to 38.

Tamil Nadu Minister D Jayakumar said though DMK has won the Lok Sabha seat, AIADMK will come back to power in the assembly elections.

"DMK has won by a margin of 8,000 votes only. They had spent crores of rupees. In the next elections, we will win and come back to power," Fisheries Minister Jayakumar told ANI.
