Father figure

The sperm donor's protracted and expensive battle leading up to the High Court demonstrates his love for the daughter he fathered [July 27]. What a wonderful dad. I am, however, critical of [lawyer] Craig Doyle's comment that the lengthy "wrestle" sidelined and overlooked the best interests of the child. The reality is that what is best for a child is to have a mother and a father who love the child and have that child's best interests at heart.

The individual behind the sperm is the father? What next: the sun rises in the east? Here's an even more radical concept: sperm donation was always a terribly bad idea. Why wasn't it condemned at the outset by ethicists?

Thanks for the ... um ...

I've heard that as long as you keep on remembering that you've forgotten stuff [July 27], then you have nothing to worry about.

Dicey Topics

I had never heard of Samin Nosrat before [July 27]. Now that I have, I'd very much like to be her friend.

F: MONICA JONES I want to thank this man for taking such a huge step to keep his child ["Father figure", July 27]. Every child needs to know where they came from, who created them, why they are like they are.

F: BRAD PARK Very interesting read. As the author indicates, it's difficult to know the whole story without the mothers' side, but it really shows you what can happen by entering into something life-changing like this without considering all the implications.

F: LYNDALL HEMARA Congratulations to this father for fighting for his right to be a great dad.

F: PAUL KALP Five years of wasted time and money, and negativity. Such a sad story. Even his win is bitter.

F: MERV PAULL Back in the day, the milk bar was the place to meet girls [Spotlight, July 27]. When I was old enough to go to the pub, off I went but hey, I was a novice there and out of my depth, so back to the milk bar.

F: GIANNA MAZZAGATTI Oh god no. The old, ugly milk bars were replaced by fine, European-style cafes. Why bring back the milk bar?
