In a bid to improve reading skills of the students, the state government has decided to set up libraries in all state-run high and higher secondary schools very soon.

A senior official from the School Education Department told DT Next that of the total, only about 500 schools have proper library facilities for the students at present.
Accordingly, rest of the schools will be getting library facilities with the availability of minimum 1,000 books in each institution, he added.
“A circular will be issued to all the school management to provide a room, which will be converted into library,” he said.
The official said the room, in an area of about 300 square feet, will have space to accommodate at least 20 students at a time to read books of their choice. “Schools should also ensure that adequate ventilation and drinking water facilities available in the libraries for the readers,” he said.
As per the plan, one staff will be appointed in each library to keep track of books by maintaining a proper student’s register.
The official stated that the objective of establishing libraries in high and higher secondary schools is to provide quality information to the students in a timely and convenient manner and to connect students with innovative services in knowledge sharing.
“Books will be purchased from leading publishers,” he said adding each library will contain books ranging from comics to sports. He said priority will be given for the availability of interesting Science and Commerce related books so that students could go beyond textbook reading.
The official said Tamil Nadu Textbook and Education Services, which rendering service in printing of quality textbooks, will also contribute important books to the libraries.
Stating that the government will earmark about Rs 2 crore each year to maintain the school libraries, he said periodical improvement such as providing online facilities will be made in the libraries.
At present, there are 6,000 government schools and about 1,800 government-aided high and higher secondary schools functioning across Tamil Nadu.
