A woman was killed and over 110 houses damaged in rain accompanied by strong winds in Udupi district on Thursday. Due to continuous rain and the India Meteorological Department forecasting 204 mm rainfall with strong winds in the district on Friday, Deputy Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati has announced a holiday for all anganwadis, schools and colleges.
Ganga Markalti (55) was milking her cow in the cowshed next to her house at Cherkady village near Brahmavar at around 6.15 a.m. when the wall of the shed which had become wet and weak due to rain in the last few days came down on her.
A severely injured Ganga Markalti was rushed to a private hospital in Brahmavar where she was pronounced brought dead. A case has been registered at the Brahmavar Police Station.
Ms. Korlapati, CEO of Zilla Panchayat Sindhu Rupesh and Superintendent of Police Nisha James rushed to Cherkady after learning about the incident and consoled the family members of Ganga Markalti.
She directed Brahmavar Tahsildar Kiran Gurayya to provide compensation to the family as soon as possible and also to identify houses and cowsheds that were weak and get them repaired.
According to information made available by the Control Room in the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, several houses were damaged in the district. This included 46 in Udupi taluk, 12 in Karkala taluk, 10 in Byndoor taluk, 20 in Kaup taluk, 18 in Brahmavar taluk and 12 in Kundapur taluk.
Sea erosion
Floods in low-lying areas of Byndoor taluk had receded. Meanwhile, sea erosion has been reported from different places in the district, including Tenka Yermal, Padubidri, Kodi and Gangolli.
Superintending Engineer, MESCOM, Narsimha Pandit told The Hindu that 15 transformers and 754 electricity poles were damaged in the district from August 1 to 7. The loss has been estimated at ₹ 53 lakh, he said.
Udupi received rainfall of 87.4 mm in the last 24 hours ended at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. Kundapur and Karkala towns received rainfall of 70 mm and 102.6 mm, respectively.
