MUMBAI: At least one person has died and another was injured as a building in
south Mumbai's Abdul Rehman Street, which had caught fire in the wee hours of Saturday morning (August 3), collapsed on Friday while it was being demolished.
The deceased has been identified as Farhid Khan, 45, while the injured has been identified as Abdul Shaikh, 24. Both had sustained head injuries and had been rushed to JJ Hospital. Khan had been declared dead before admission in the hospital.
Authorities from the civic disaster management unit said that a few labourers who were working on demolishing the structure following Saturday's blaze which had damaged it considerably are likely to be trapped in the debris. Currently, rescue operations are in progress.
On Saturday morning, a major fire had erupted within a shop in the four-storey building at Abdul Rehman Street near Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai popularly known as Crawford Market.
Four persons who were trapped within the building were rescued by the Mumbai fire brigade officers. Three firemen who suffered suffocation during the fire-fighting operations had been moved to nearby hospitals. However, their condition was stable, said civic authorities.
It took over 12 hours for the fire brigade to control the smoke from the blaze.
