After a gap of several years, River Noyyal showed its vigour following continuous downpour in the catchment areas and it flowed strong through its entire course in Coimbatore district before entering Tiruppur district.
The water level increased significantly on Thursday morning as a result of heavy rain in Siruvani region on Wednesday night. The region has been receiving good rain for the last four days.
The heavy inflow of water, witnessed after nearly a decade, submerged the bridge across Chinnar, a tributary of the Noyyal.
Chithirai Chavadi anaicut, one of the major anaicuts of the river supplying water to several tanks, was overflowing on Thursday evening.
At Perur padithurai, where the river was dry when Aadi Perukku was observed on August 3, water touched the steps of the bathing ghat.
A small bridge across the Noyyal on the way from Perur to Veerakeralam was fully submerged, cutting off vehicle movement.
Meanwhile, foam generated due to effluents released into the Noyyal lay accumulated over a small bridge across the river on Pattanampudur - Ondipudur Road. It disrupted the movement of cars and two-wheelers on the road for a few hours. Garbage dumped in canals got washed into the river and choked the flow of water at several places in Coimbatore.
