Four
spinning mill workers were killed and two others injured after the car they were travelling in crashed into a truck laden with coffee beans at Punjaipuliyampatty near Sathyamangalam in Erode district in the early hours of Thursday.
The Punjaipuliyampatty police identified the deceased as M Jaiganesh, 34, of Tirunelveli district; Veeraraghavan, 26, of Dindigul district; and Thangapandy, 29, and Shankar, 24, both from Vilathikulam in Tuticorin district. Two of their friends - Bharathidasan, 26, of Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district and Govindaraj, 26, of Tirupur district – escaped with injuries. All the six were employed with a spinning mill at Sevur in Tirupur district.
The incident, an investigation officer said, occurred while the six were on their way to Punjaipuliyampatty as part of their work. Jaiganesh was at the wheel.
When they neared Ponmedu area on Punjaipuliyampatty-Tirupur state highway around 2am, the car crashed into the truck that was heading to Virudhunagar district from Karnataka. “Jaiganesh, Thangapandi and Shankar succumbed to their injuries on the spot,” the officer said.
When alerted, the Punjaipuliyampatty police took the injured to the government hospital in Coimbatore, where Veeraraghavan died without responding to the treatment. “The condition of the remaining two are stable,” the officer said.
The bodies of the three, who died on the spot, were sent to the government hospital in Sathyamangalam for postmortem.
The Punjaipuliyampatty police have registered a case and further inquiry is on.
