Ahead of the Independence Day next week, Red Alert security arrangements have been put in place at the Anna International and Kamaraj domestic terminals from Thursday.

After the Parliament abrogated Article 370 that accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated it into two Union Territories, the Union Home Ministry issued an advisory to all States to tighten security and maintain law and order.
Since December, seven-tier security arrangements have been put in place at the airport. From Thursday, it was brought under ‘Red Alert’ security.
All vehicles entering the airport were subjected to thorough checks and only passengers with valid tickets were allowed entry after verifying their identities. Entry of visitors was also banned at the airport.
International passengers were asked to report for boarding 3.5 hours before the scheduled departure, while it is 1.5 hours in the case of domestic passengers.
Authorities have banned carrying liquids and other items like halwa, jam and pickles.
Additional CCTV cameras are also being installed as part of the heightened security arrangements, and regular checks were being carried out in the parking areas with the help of Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad personnel and sniffer dogs.
The security was enhanced in the wake of the recent arrest of 16 terror suspects by the National Investigation Agency in connection with Tamil Nadu Ansarulla case and for planning to carry out terror attacks in India.
Airport sources said the arrangements would remain in force till the midnight
of August 31.
