PUNE: The incessant rainfall in Pune, Mumbai and the ghat section has adversely affected train traffic between the two cities. The main railway track between Katraj and Lonavla was badly affected due to heavy mudslides and falling of boulders on Saturday night.

Due to this, prominent trains used for daily commute were cancelled. As per the railway officials, the train service will resume and will take two-three days. On Saturday night around 11 pm, when train number 11009 Sinhagad Express was about to reach Lonavla, a big boulder fell on the track along with mudslides. The train was diverted via Igatpuri, Manmad and Daund. Such incidents on this route are not new during monsoon.

“To clear the railway track around 250 railway staffers, gang men and others are involved in normalising the railway traffic movement. Formation below down line was washed out due to water and mud in South East Ghat section due to very heavy rains the last couple of days (Karjat Lonavala section). Work on a few more sites is on on a war footing. There are twelve such sites,” said Central Railway Spokesperson AK Singh.

“The track will take two-three more days to normalise. Several trains were cancelled in the past two days and on Wednesday a few more trains will be cancelled. Some were diverted via Surat, Jalgaon, Manmad and Daund. Prominent trains like Deccan Express, Intercity Express, Deccan Queen, Sinhagad Express are cancelled,” said Singh.
