The city is already struggling due to overtourism and cruise ships were a long term bane for Venice.
It was announced by the Italian minister for transport, Danilo Toninelli that the ships would be rerouted away from the centre of Venice to ports like the outlying Fusian and Lombardia terminals. The terminals are located within the Venetian lagoon.
The liners which carry around 3,000 passengers will be diverted away from central Venice from next month.
A third of cruise ships would be diverted away from central Venice by next year.
The city will be consulting with residents in the longer term on where new berths for the cruise ships would be situated.
In June a cruise liner had hit a dock in Venice and the decision happens following the incident.
On one of Venice’s busiest canals four people were injured when a towering cruise ship crashed into a dock.
The incident occurred on the Giudecca Canal which is a major thoroughfare leading to Saint Mark’s Square.
After the June collision, the mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro had threatened to request that UNESCO has put the city on its ‘blacklist’ due to the ongoing battle with cruise ships.
According to Brugnaro Venice residents had no faith in the Italian government. Venice locals took to streets with a sign stating – Keep large boats out of the lagoon.
