'They are known for their love of animals!' Fans rally behind Bindi and Robert Irwin after PETA named them in 'animal cruelty' complaint over wildlife segments on talk shows

Fans have rallied behind Bindi, 21, and Robert Irwin, 15, the children of late Crocodile Hunter Steve, amid complaints from PETA.

On Tuesday, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) named the Australia Zoo wildlife warriors in a letter to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

The letter called for an investigation into Grant Kemmerer of Wild World of Animals, for alleged animal cruelty, and fans took to Twitter to defend the Irwin family.

'Obsessive morons! Any animal on these shows is under proper care, has their trainer there with them, and is by no means being abused or otherwise mistreated,' one fan tweeted.

Another person wrote: 'Really PETA the Irwin's are known for their love of animals. Instead of going against the family why not stand with them.'

A third fan added: '@peta seriously give your heads a shake...the tonight show treats animals incorrectly?? COME ON!! Steve Irwin's children are amazing examples of being in touch with every creature and respecting them. Seriously go get some hobbies.'

The Irwin family regularly appear on Jimmy Fallon with exotic wildlife and Robert was once featured alongside 'animal expert' Grant Kemmerer.

PETA's letter called for Grant to be investigated 'for apparently violating the terms of his exhibitor permits by allowing members of the public to have direct contact with wild animals during appearances on various talk shows.'

A source close to production at The Tonight Show told Page Six this week that the safety of animals is always a priority.

'The safety of animals is important to everyone at the show and we take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety,' the source said.

PETA also named other celebrities in the letter including actress Kate Beckinsale for 'touching a frog' on The Tonight show in April and Wendy Williams for 'petting a kangaroo' back in May

Daily Mail Australia has contacted the Irwin family for comment.
