A manhunt for an alleged perpetrator of a backyard abduction and rape has been suddenly called off after police confirmed the incident did not occur.
Police received a report of an alleged sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl in the mid-north coast town of Taree in New South Wales on Wednesday morning.
They urged anyone who may have witnessed the reported abduction and sexual assault of the young girl to come forward.
But after an extensive investigation, detectives confirmed the report was false and no abduction or sexual assault had ever occurred.

Police were told the girl had been grabbed from behind while she was in the backyard of her home.
The girl was reportedly taken to nearby bushland where she was sexually touched by an unknown man.
A Taree resident contacted police after the girl turned up at the person's home and the girl's mother reported her missing shortly after.
An investigation was launched and following forensic examinations and speaking with a number of people, detectives confirmed the report was false.
Police have spoken to the young girl and offered support services.
