254 new appointments of teaching faculties for colleges in Haryana

CHANDIGARH: Two hundred and fifty four new appointments on the position of teaching faculties will be made in colleges of the Haryana state to fill up long pending vacancies. According to Panchkula SP Sukhija, joint director-1, office of director, Higher Education, against the statewide requirement of 6600 teachers in the state colleges, there are only 2400 teachers who are working on regular and, 2300 others on extension basis. Since the department is facing acute shortage of eligible teaching faculty so a requisition to fill up 524 posts in the various categories was sent to the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) in February this year, out of which the department has received 254 recommendations from the commission. As a result, procedure for recruitment has been started.
Furnishing information to Haryana Human Rights Commission (HHRC), the officer said that in the year 2017-18, the recommendations of 1647 regular assistant professors were received from the HPSC and the appointments have already been offered to the eligible candidates except in a few cases in which matter is subjudice before the high court of Punjab and Haryana in Chandigarh.
Bench of chairperson Justice SK Mittal, member Justice KC Puri and Deep Bhatia had taken suo motu cognizance of the media report related to deployment of one regular lecturer over 181 students at Government College at Hathin, Palwal district, considering it as serious violation of human rights of students. Sukhija said that as the student strength increased from 84 to 182 in past two years, so authorities now requires total nine teachers besides one regular teacher. In the past to meet the gap, some temporary teachers have been deployed time to time.
A whooping Rs 13 crore was spent on the construction of college building two years ago. It was originally set up as a women's college under the state government's flagship scheme, "Beti Bachao Beti Padao" but due to inadequate enrolment, later it was converted into a co-ed institution.
The main objective behind creating a new institution was to provide arts and commerce courses. But it appeared colossal waste of money as the lone teacher was holding classes for both the streams for three days a week since the very beginning. There is no teacher for mathematics and account subjects. According to sources, the family members and relatives of the students approached authorities many times but to no avail.
Acknowledging that the sincere efforts are being carried out to fill up the vacancies by the state government, the bench decided not to take any action against the concerned authorities in the matter.
