Drapes for the dull days

Curtains can make or break the look of your interiors — they have an instant charm which can elevate the beauty of your home. While you are free to choose any fabric, colour or design, monsoon calls for some extra thought because you would want curtains that would uplift your spirits when it’s dark and humid outside.

Dinesh Arora, Delhi-based interior designer and wholesale dealer of curtains and drapery, insists that you should buy plenty of vibrant and light-weight curtains for your homes in this grim weather. He adds, “For this season, you must keep thick and dull curtains away, tucked safely in your trunks and instead invest in some eye-catching light weight curtains that not just look great but also allow ample light to enter your rooms. Going for fabrics like sheer, silk, and light cotton is advisable. You could also use a combination of two fabrics or two colours to amp things up.”

Speaking of the colours that you must bring home, Arora is of the opinion that solid colours should be preferred instead of prints. “You need to ensure that the colours are not just bright and peppy but also soothing and happy. For example, hues like leaf green, aqua, turquoise, scarlet and milk yellow, living coral, peaches, light orange etc instantly brighten up your mood and make your house look elegant and vibrant. However, if you are a fan of prints and want to get curtains with prints, avoid florals at all cost and stick to simple ones. Keep it understated,” says Arora.

If your doors and windows have curtains that are thick and heavy, they will get wet if you have to keep doors and windows open, after power failure and won’t dry quickly. “With no sunshine and humidity in the weather, your curtains and drapes won’t just stay wet but will also end up smelling awful. Hence, between June and September, it is always better to keep these curtains away and buy a new set for the rainy season,” he advises.
