Thiruvananthapuram: Over 3,000 motorists were issued check reports for traffic
violations in a special drive conducted by Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) in association with police department across the state. The drive was conducted as part of the Road Safety Action plan proposed by MVD to curb accidents and create awareness regarding
traffic rules from August 5.
A total of Rs 17,16,050 was imposed as compounding fee from motorists in the three-day checking drive for traffic violations for not wearing
seatbelts and
helmets conducted from August 5 to 7.
In the drive 986 cases for not wearing seatbelts and 1501 cases for not wearing helmets were recorded. An amount of Rs 100 is charged as fine for not wearing seatbelts and helmet.
In the amendment Motor Vehicle Act, it is proposed that the traffic department will impose Rs 1000 fine for not wearing seatbelts and for not wearing helmet while driving Rs 1000 and disqualification of driving license for three months will be imposed.
In continuation of the drive, the checking on unauthorised parking is scheduled from August 8 to 10. The special drive will continue till August 31.
In addition to vehicle checking, strict action will be taken for other traffic violations.
The driving license of motorists, found to be overspeeding and driving in inebriated condition will be suspended and they will have to attend a class on road safety.
There are district level and state level committees to review the action plan each day. Steps to remove encroachment on road and pavement, tree branches and advertisement boards which obstruct the view of motorists, installation of sign boards and other road safety measures on black spots and restoration of roads and drains are other activities to be taken up in the project.
