GREATER NOIDA: On the lines of Delhi’s Raahgiri, the city may get
car-free zones that will be developed as cultural streets where entertainment programmes will be held on the second Saturday of every month.
No motorised vehicles will be allowed on these stretches. The
Greater Noida Authority is looking to reduce pollution and promote the use of public transport in the city.
While the authority is yet to finalise details of date, activities and spots, officials said that it will begin with the road stretch in front of the Greater Noida Authority office. The car-free stretches will further be extended towards Knowledge Park and other areas with universities and colleges. The authority will also develop footpaths and cycle tracks across the city soon.
“We are discussing cycle stands at metro stations and promotion of a bicycle-sharing system. The idea is to promote walking, cycling and use of non-motorised transport. We will also introduce electric vehicles gradually,” said Narendra Bhooshan, CEO, GNIDA.
The authority on Thursday also decided to set up electric vehicle charging stations, and permission will be given to petrol pumps for setting them up.
GNIDA also decided to set up Wi-Fi spots in 20 villages.
