AHMEDABAD: A man named Mijanur Siddique Ali Rehman (30), a native of Assam, was caught by CISF personnel
at Ahmedabad airport on Wednesday evening with a knife concealed in his shoes. Security agencies have detained the man, who is a resident of Surat and works in a
cloth factory. The accused was to board a flight to Guwahati and went to frisking
booth number 1 at about 1.45pm. “A loud beep sound was heard when I frisked the area near his boot,” said inspector executive, Uttamkumar Goswami, of CISF. “When checked, an image of knife appeared on the screen. He was immediately taken into custody,” he said. On checking his right boot, a knife was found in the sole.
The accused, who is a native of Dhubri district in Assam, claimed that he had left the knife in the boot by mistake. He told the cops that he was boarding the flight for the first time and was going to meet his family stranded in flood.
Several security agencies have been interrogating the accused. DCP zone 4 Neeraj Badgujar said that there are two possibilities. “He might be planning to hijack the plane or had kept the knife in the boot for self defence. The accused told us that he was not aware of the presence of knife in the sole, which is very unlikely,” he said.
Inspector KC Rathwa of Airport police station said, “The object found on him resembles the cutter used to cut cloth.”
Police have sought information about the accused from Surat and Assam. “We want to ascertain whether he has any link with terror outfits,” added Badgujar.
Airport sources said that during frisking at the security check points, passengers wearing bulky shoes are made to take them off and get them screened in the x-ray scanner.
