AHMEDABAD: Ghatlodia police on Wednesday booked two brothers for abetting the suicide of a man after the deceased person’s wife filed a complaint. The woman stated that her husband was upset as she was constantly stalked and repeatedly molested by one of the two men.
The complainant, widow of the deceased and mother of two kids, aged 7 and 5 respectively, works as a domestic help near her residence in Memnagar area of the city. Her husband used to drive an autorickshaw.
One of the two accused persons, Chandan Thakor, who lived in front of the complainant’s house, had been stalking her for last three years. Very often, he used to hold her hand and molested her in public, states the FIR.
In October 2018, she narrated her ordeal before her husband who tried to make Chandan desist. Her husband also sought Chandan’s elder brother Vishnu Thakor’s intervention so that the woman was not harassed, states the FIR.
However, the duo threatened the complainant’s husband and told him they weren’t ready to discuss the matter with him. After this incident, the woman’s father-in-law with the help of community leaders tried to convince Chandan to not harass her.

But the duo, and especially Chandan, did not pay any heed to the elderly persons’ instructions and continued to harass her. He even threatened her to kill her husband and two children if she spoke up against the harassment, states the FIR.
On May 27, the woman’s husband went to Narmada canal near Jamiyatpura village in Gandhinagar and committed suicide by jumping into the canal. A team of Gandhinagar Fire and Emergency Services personnel fished out his body. Adalaj police registered a case of accidental death and later the inquiry was transferred to Ghatlodia police. After investigation, Ghatlodia police booked the two under charges of IPC sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 354 (molestation), 294-B (uttering obscene words), 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) and abetment.
