NEW DELHI: The recalibration of
autorickshaw meters following the auto
fare hike will soon start and in a move that will provide relief to auto drivers, Delhi government has done away with the need for ‘road try test’ after recalibration.
Announcing the decision to discontinue the practice of road try test after recalibration of auto fare meters, consumer affairs and legal metrology department minister Imran Hussain on Wednesday said that chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had directed him to hold consultation meeting with all stake-holders to simplify the procedure for recalibration of auto fare meters. “This initiative of Kejriwal government will benefit autorickshaw drivers as well as commuters, as the recalibration process will be done faster,” he said.
Hussain said autorickshaw drivers were complaining about charging of exorbitant prices by manufacturers, repairers and dealers for the upgradation of software. He said that an advisory has been issued to the manufacturers, repairers and dealers to not charge more than Rs 400 per meter plus applicable GST for undertaking software upgradation post revision of auto fares.
Previously, after recalibration and initial verification by the weights & measures department (now renamed legal metrology) at its laboratory at Wazirpur, auto drivers had to go for the road try test at Rewla Khanpur in Najafgarh. Auto drivers had been demanding that road try test at the far-away location in Najafgarh was inconvenient to them and was causing loss of a day’s earning.
The minister said that the legal metrology department will henceforth issue verification certificate after carrying out simulated road test method in the laboratory of the department itself. These tests will be conducted at the taxi meter unit of the department located at Wazirpur Industrial Area.
Currently, autos/taxis have a device fitted with their vehicle called ‘transducers’, which convert the distance to be measured into pulses or digital data that are passed to the auto/taxi meter to calculate and indicate the fare.
The department has so far been testing the auto/taxi fare meter with the help of electronic pulse generating machine in the lab situated at taxi meter unit, which checks the fare meter on the basis of pulse generated for distance travelled and calculates fare.
