CHANDIGARH: The negligence of a
private contractor hired for building Manimajra's railway under-bridge broke a
water-supply pipeline on Tuesday evening. Since then, 10,000 families are without water.
The water pressure dipped, affecting the supply to the first and second floors mostly. The contractor was clueless about location of the underground pipe, since he was provide with no map. On Tuesday evening, a
JCB machine deployed to dig out the soil ended up rupturing the pipe. When there was no water supply till 8pm, people started making enquiries and came to know about the damage.
Officials of the municipal corporation did temporary repair, which did not improve water pressure in this residential area. Area councillor Jagtar Singh Dhillon said: "After receiving complaints, I asked the department concerned for a quick repair. Officials promised to restore the supplyh by Wednesday. I will ask them about it."
During a visit to the site, a TOI team found another damaged pipeline, which cannot even be repaired, since it reinforced concrete shell is broken. The MC had repaired the pipeline damaged the previous evening but a bit of leakage was still left, which it promised to repair by Wednesday evening. Residents questioned the level of monitoring by the UT administration and the municipal corporation and the lack of coordination between them.
