Erode: The Moyar river was in spate on Thursday after heavy rain lashed the Nilgiris on Wednesday night.
The river, which flows between the Nilgiris and Erode districts, finally culminates in the Bhavanisagar dam, the total capacity of which is 105ft. Meanwhile, the inflow to the dam increased to 67,149 cubic feet per second (cusecs) in the evening from 17,705cusecs in the afternoon. The water level in the dam also went up by more than 6ft in just a few hours to 74.13ft in the evening from 68ft in the afternoon.
A Public Works Department official said it was usual for the river to flow with flood water whenever the Nilgiris district receives heavy rain. Forest officials, meanwhile, banned coracle services in the Moyar river until further orders. The move has hit the residents of Tengumarahada in the Nilgiris as they have to come to Bhavanisagar village in Erode for their every need.
The official said both the villages were surrounded by the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) and the residents had to cross the river using coracle to travel from one village to the another. “Some residents of Tengumarahada are stranded in Bhavanisagar. They have to wait for coracle servicers to resume to return to their village.”
