Jagan Mohan Reddy conducts aerial survey of flood-hit Polavaram, Devipatnam
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy Thursday conducted an aerial survey of the flood-hit Polavaram and Devipatnam regions in East and West Godavari districts, even as the water level at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowaleswaram crossed the second danger mark.
At Polavaram, water level increased to 27.86 metres and it was rising due to heavy inflow from upstream Bhadrachalam, where the first warning signal was issued.
Jagan announced a special relief of Rs 5,000 to each flood-affected family which have lost their livelihood.
More than 70 per cent of the inundated villages were tribal habitations, he pointed out. He asked officials to supply essential commodities to families in inundated villages as well as those marooned.
Besides paying compensation for crop loss, the chief minister directed officials to supply fresh seeds free-of-cost.
Situation in Maharashtra: All govt departments directed to help flood-hit people, says minister
Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar on Thursday said the government has directed all its departments to help the people affected by floods in Sangli and Kolhapur districts in the state.
"The government has directed all its departments, including the disaster management department, to provide all possible help to the families affected by floods in Sangli and Kolhapur," he said.
All arrangements have been made to provide food to the affected people, he added.
Mungantiwar also expressed grief over the death of nine people in a boat capsize incident during the rescue operation in Sangli on Thursday.
Situation in Goa: 150 families evacuated in 4 tehsils following heavy rains
Meanwhile, in Goa, some 150 families have been evacuated in four tehsils of Goa following heavy rains and release of water from Tillari dam on Goa-Maharashtra border, the state government informed on Thursday.
Tourists and fishermen were advised to stay away from the sea.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the government was on high alert in view of the forecast of heavy rain in the next few days.
Several villages in Bardez, Pernem and Bicholim in North Goa district were flooded after water was released from Tillari dam following heavy showers in the catchment area.
The dam is located in North Goa along the border with Maharashtra.
Four deaths reported from Kerala, three from Tamil Nadu today: Report
At least 16 people have died in rain-related incidents over the past few days in parts of South India, even as torrential rains, gusty winds and landslips left a trail of destruction and disrupted train and road transport services Thursday.

An alert has been sounded in four districts of Kerala where heavy rains, squally winds and widespread landslips have wreaked havoc in several areas after the second spell of the south-west monsoon intensified. (PTI)
