Kolkata: The city was drenched by multiple spells of rain on Wednesday, even though the deep
depression that had formed over northwest Bay of Bengal moved towards north
Odisha.
It is headed for
Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh and will gradually weaken, causing light to moderate rain in the city on Thursday. The frequency and intensity of the
showers could be less than what they were on Wednesday, according to the
Met office. The city received 36.1mm rain on Wednesday.
Several districts of Gangetic Bengal, including South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura and Purulia, received heavy showers. Diamond Harbour received 70mm rain on Wednesday. But with the depression moving away, the showers will lessen, according to Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director GK Das. The showers on Wednesday were accompanied by gusty winds that reached a speed of 30-40 km/hr across south Bengal.
“Kolkata also remained windy throughout Wednesday,” said Das. “While the depression triggered repeated spells of rain in the city, it started moving in a northwesterly direction and could hit the Jharkhand-Chattisgarh region. Showers will be less frequent on Thursday, though the city is likely to remain cloudy,” added Das.
The monsoon trough, which passed through Odisha on Wednesday, can move back to Bengal again. “It can return to Digha on Thursday, which will result in some rain. But we don’t expect heavy showers in south Bengal now,” said Das.
The regular drizzles have brought the rain deficit down, but are still not sufficient to wipe it out completely. “In Kolkata, monsoon lasts four-and-half months till mid-October. So, there is still time for low-pressures and depressions to form and strike the city. Already we have one brewing over Bay of Bengal and more could follow. Eventually, the deficit may climb down,” said Das.
