PATNA: The state police headquarters have sent out a message to the district police and civil administrations across the state to reach out to people and sensitise them against
mob violence. The move comes after two incidents of lynching at Rupasupur and Dhanarua in Patna district on Saturday night.
Patna alone has witnessed at least half a dozen incidents of mob violence, including the two recent lynchings, since July 30. Thirty-two people were arrested in connection with the Rupaspur incident while two were nabbed and sent to jail in the Dhanarua case.
“Specific instructions were given after Supreme Court had taken up the mob lynching issue and had directed state governments to act accordingly for preventing such violence. But after some recent incidents of thrashing over rumours, officials were directed to take steps by roping in public representatives,” ADG (headquarters) Jitendra Kumar told TOI.
As part of these instructions, Patna police have initiated public events from Monday for creating awareness to counter rumours leading to violence, he added.
ADG Kumar said police officers were directed to rope in mukhiyas, sarpanchs and other village representatives to send out a stern message that none would be spared if found involved in rumour mongering resulting in thrashing or lynching.
Patna SSP Garima Malik informed that a police-public interaction was held at Kadamkuan on Monday and a similar event was held at
Danapur bus stand on Tuesday to create awareness and counter rumours.
“The motive to organise the programme at Danapur bus stand was that several people traverse through that point and words of police would reach locations were people would travel,” Malik said, adding police officer’s cell phone numbers were also being shared with the public at such events.
She said similar programmes were organised by all SDPOs and SHOs . “Results would be analysed and awareness campaigns would continue,” she said, adding such campaigns are also improving communication between the police and the public.
The SSP said the Kadamkuan event yielded prompt results as she received tip-offs on illegal activities on her cell phone. “Investigations were going on in Rupaspur and Dhanarua incidents. Further arrests would be made soon,” she added.
