MUMBAI: When a police patrol team stumbled upon a car parked alongside a road in Agripada with its boot open recently, it was suspected that its occupants had run out of gas and were changing cylinders. But it turns out, they were actually conspiring to break into a nearby
jewellery shop and the police patrol team had foiled a
robbery.
On July 17 midnight, inspector Kishore Shinde, and sub-inspectors Arjun Kudale and Deepak Basarkar were patrolling near Salvation Army at Agripada when they noticed a parked Wagon R. "We found two men near the car and another two on the footpath. The car's boot was open and a CNG cylinder and some wires were visible. We thought the occupants had run out of gas. However, as soon as we halted our car near the Wagon R to check, the men vanished. We immediately knew something was fishy," said an officer.
The cops then used an RTO app to find out the owner of the Wagon R. "Surprisingly, the number was registered against a Swift. We called a towing van and brought the Wagon R to the police station. Next day, the chasis number was found out and the car owner was traced to Pune. The Pune police told the Agripada police that the Wagon R had been stolen from their jurisdiction on July 15," another officer told TOI.
Investigations led the Agripada police to the first set of accused-Abu Bakar (32), a welder, and Shafeeque Ansari (55), the kingpin. "During interrogation, the duo admitted that the Wagon R was stolen and that the gang was preparing to rob a jewellery shop near Jhoola Maidan in Byculla. Their plan was to open the shutter using a cutter. They had planned to use LPG and oxygen to light a fire and cut open a steel cupboard inside the shop," said the officer.
The duo led the police to Zubair Shaikh (39), Badre Aalam (30), and Rabbani Shah (48). "All accused have huge debts and hence, they wanted to rob the shop. Ansari had recced the jewellery shop before drawing up the plan. He asked Zubair to arrange a vehicle. Zubair sought help from Aalam, a mechanic. Aalam turned to a friend for help and had to pay Rs 60,000 for the job. There are car theft cases registered against Aalam's friend at MHB and Vanrai police stations. A case is registered against him too with the Gujarat police and in Pune," added the officer.
The police said the CNG cylinder found in the boot had been brought by Bakar from his house. "There was also an oxygen cylinder, cutters, hammers and other equipment in the car. They had hired the oxygen cylinder for Rs 3,500. All the accused have been sent to Arthur Road jail.
