CHANDIGARH: Former Ateli MLA and senior Congress leader Naresh Yadav on Wednesday said that if the Manohar Lal Khattar-led BJP government in Haryana failed to retain the proposed AIIMs at Manethi in Rewari district, before the imposition of election code of conduct in view of the upcoming state assembly polls, a massive agitation would be launched on the issue and the state would be responsible for its outcome.
Yadav, who was addressing media at MLA hostel, said that the government’s intention is to shift AIIMs from Manethi to any place near Gurugram, where already the best facilities are available.
“Opening of AIIMs in or around Manethi will not only benefit the residents of people of southern Haryana, but also the residents from Alwar, Rajasthan. There is a newly constructed three-storey civil hospital building at Ateli but even the basic modern medical facilities are missing. There is no MRI, trauma center or ventilator facility in any government hospital here. Yadav strongly said that all these facilities are the need of this area and the government should take a decision on this as soon as possible,” Yadav added.
Referring to the objection raised by Union ministry of environment and climate change, which has refused to give approval of setting up of AIIMS at Manethi because it falls in forest cover, Yadav said that to carry out several projects, the governments on several occasions went ahead with the projects. He said that they can pledge to implant double the trees than those likely to be uprooted due to the project.
Highlighting the necessity of AIIMS, Yadav said that in the Ahirwal area of Haryana, a large number of people are serving in Army, paramilitary or other armed forces but due to the government’s negligence, people here are being deprived of their basic rights of good medical facility.
In February this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced to set up AIIMS at Manethi in Rewari district at a programme held in Kurukshetra and the provision of budget of Rs 1,300 crore for AIIMS in Manethi has also been made in the interim budget presented in Lok Sabha but the forest department has refused to allot the marked space for AIIMS.

The project was planned on over 235 acres falling under Aravali plantation. The committee of the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEF&CC) has rejected the proposal saying the area has dense forest with 16,000 trees and 21,000 plants, and is home to many wild species, including black buck (Haryana’s state animal) and sambhar.
Even the Forest Conservation Act 1980 is applicable on 224 acres, provided by the Manethi gram panchayat for the AIIMS project, and a total of 15,886 trees and 29,943 plants are required to be cut to execute the project in Manethi.
