AHMEDABAD: The sowing so far has taken place only in 75% of the average area of 84.77 lakh hectares in Gujarat. The percentage was 68.63% as on July 29.
Recent spells of rain across many parts of the state have saved crops such as cotton and groundnut, and farmers have resumed sowing in earnest. The sowing of groundnut and cotton crops, which had come to a standstill for nearly two weeks, picked up over the past week with cotton crops being sowed across 1 lakh hectares and groundnut being sowed across 0.75 lakh hectares.
Officials said that the sowing of vegetables has also increased, which is expected to bring down prices. An officer of the agriculture department said that that sowing of all crops, including cash crops and vegetables, had begun after cyclone Vayu brought rains to the state. But he said there was a decline thereafter as the skies dried up.
"Concerns about groundnut crops remain as Devbhumi Dwarka and Morbi districts are still suffering from rainfall deficiency," said a groundnut dealer. But cotton farmers have regained hope. "The recent spells of rain have saved the crops and will boost both quality and yield," said an Ahmedabad cotton broker. "Had the rain been delayed further, the crops would have been severely damaged."

The sowing figures released by the government at the end of July had revealed that cotton sowing as on July 15 had been across 21.43 lakh hectares and had increased to 24.70 lakh hectares by August 5. And groundnut was sown in an additional 1.7 lakh hectares between July 15 and August 5. As on July 15, groundnut was sown in 12.91 lakh hectares; the figure increased to 14.62 lakh hectares by August 5.
The officer said that the sowing of pulses was only in 53.81% of the normal sowing area of 5.80 lakh hectares. The only crop which has crossed 90% sowing is bajra — 99.91% across the average sowing area of 1.64 lakh hectares.
