Rumpl, a Portland-based manufacturer of high-tech blankets, is using discarded plastic bottles to make polyester thread
"Technical blankets" retailer Rumpl has announced it will step up the use of recycled materials in its manufacturing processes, as it works to eliminate virgin plastics from some of its key product lines.
The Portland-based firm - which makes high-tech blankets for outdoor use - announced the shift last week with the launch of a new product line, the NanoLoft Puffy Blanket, which uses a synthetic alternative to down to trap warmth.
Each individual blanket uses upwards of 60 discarded plastic bottles, which are respun into high-quality polyester thread.
The same is true for Rumpl's Original Puffy Blanket, which has also been redesigned to incorporate more recycled plastic. As a result, by the end of 2019, Rumpl will have recycled three million plastic bottles that would otherwise have ended up in landfill, the firm said.
"The new NanoLoft and Original Puffy are just the beginning, because the use of post-consumer recycled materials in our products reflects our values as a company, as well as what Rumpl fans want to see as we continue to grow and evolve," said Wylie Robinson, Rumpl founder and CEO.
"We're looking across our product line and will be incorporating recycled materials into several of our new products launching later this year and in early 2020."
