DINDIGULMembers of Tamil Nadu Textile and Common Labour Union (TTCU) will take up a massive campaign of sending 5000 post cards and emails from each district, calling for the withdrawal of the New Education Policy (NEP), the draft of which was released recently. A resolution to this effect was passed at the State executive committee meeting of TTCU held here on Wednesday.
The meeting was attended by State president S. Thivya Rakini, general secretary M. Jeeva and treasurer M. Malathi.
TTCU is a trade union of women textile and garment workers and it works exclusively for young adolescent workers.
In her address, Ms. Thivya alleged that the NEP would only promote child labour and bonded labour practices at a time when workers were fighting for their rights . In the name of skill development training, it would force children to work throughout the day as it attempted to revive the kula kalvi system. It would affect poor children in villages at all levels, she alleged.
In another resolution, the meeting said that the NEP would help to promote child labour and bonded labour in textile and garment industries of Tamil Nadu. It apprehended that at least one million girl children might turn into child labour in the next three years. Hence, the Union government should withdraw the “anti-people” NEW without delay, it said.
