PUNE: Following a brief lull, rainfall activity in the state is expected to intensify from Wednesday evening, a Met department forecast said.
The India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday that a depression over northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to deepen in the next 24 hours.
Officials said this deep depression, in association with an active Arabian Sea, will cause isolated extremely
heavy rainfall over the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa, among other regions, over the next 3-4 days, while showers in Pune too are also likely to intensify from Wednesday evening.
"Floodwaters have till Wednesday evening to recede, after which rainfall activity in Pune city and ghat areas may increase," Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather at IMD Pune, said, adding, "Rain may even become heavy on August 8. This may again cause an increase in inundation and flooding in low-lying areas."
Also in the next 24 hours, the depression's west-northwesterly movement is expected to slow down, as predicted by various models. "The system is likely to linger longer during its passage over various regions, intensifying the rainfall activity in those regions," Kashyapi said.
Konkan-Goa and Madhya Maharashtra (ghat areas) are likely to get heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy falls at isolated places, on August 7 and 8. On August 9 and 10, parts of Konkan-Goa may get heavy to very heavy rainfall. For Madhya Maharashtra, heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rains at isolated places have been forecast on August 9, and isolated heavy to very heavy rain on August 10.
IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in the ghat areas of Pune, Kolhapur and Satara districts till August 9, which is likely to worsen the situation there, IMD said. Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts may also witness extremely heavy rainfall activity on August 7, followed by heavy to very heavy rain on August 8.
Kashyapi said Pune might receive moderate rainfall on Wednesday, with the intensity increasing from Wednesday night. "Overall, Wednesday is likely to see moderate rain in Pune's case, but the city is likely to receive heavy showers at isolated places on Thursday," Kashyapi said.
Over the past few days, Pune city has been experiencing moderate rainfall activity. In the 24 hours from Monday 8.30am to Tuesday 8.30am, Pashan and Shivajinagar received moderate rainfall at 30mm and 22mm, respectively, while Lohegaon recorded light rain at 13mm.
Triple-digit rains continued to lash parts of state, with 47 locations in Maharashtra recording from 100mm to more than 300mm of rainfall.
