Second round of heavy rains expected in south Gujarat, other parts

IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of Gujarat this week.
AHMEDABAD: After heavy rains pounded several parts of south Gujarat last week, forecast of India Meteorological Department (IMD) has mentioned heavy to very heavy rainfall in several places this week which primarily includes regions of south and central Gujarat.
Jayanta Sarkar, regional director, IMD, said that a deep depression over northwest Bay of Bengal is very likely to move west-northwards and weaken gradually into a depression in next 24 hours. "The system is likely to give heavy to very heavy rainfall in the state. Almost all the regions of the state are expected to receive rainfall this week,” he said.
As per the IMD website, August 8 would see heavy to very heavy rainfall in Dangs, Navsari, Valsad, Surat, Anand, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Tapi, Bharuch, Narmada, Kheda, Panchmahal and Dahod. The next day can see much widespread heavy rainfall with inclusion of all the above-mentioned districts in addition to Aravalli, Mahisagar, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Gir Somnath, Junagadh, Dwarka, Jamnagar, Morbi, Rajkot and Kutch.

“After August 10, the system can give heavy rainfall in northern parts of Gujarat including Banaskantha, Patan, Sabarkantha, Mehsana and parts of Saurashtra,” said an IMD official, adding that south Gujarat is likely to get rainfall on almost all days.
As per the IMD website, overall Gujarat has 3% rain deficit till August 6 but there is huge disparity among regions – while north and south Gujarat has recorded 10% surplus compared to long-term average rainfall, Saurashtra and Kutch still have 18% deficit. This spell can improve the tally in some districts of Saurashtra, believe Met department officials.
