Water recedes in Pimpri

PIMPRI: The continuous discharge of water from Pavana dam due to heavy rainfall in the dam’s catchment area was stopped at 5 pm on Tuesday after a respite from rainfall.

The water level in Pimpri Chinchwad receded after the irrigation authorities started gradually reducing the discharge of water from Pavana dam from Monday evening.

Residents of Old Sangvi heaved a sigh of relief after the water receded from their area and normalcy was restored by Tuesday evening.

Old Sangvi located at the confluence of Pavana and Mula rivers was affected by the rising water level for the last two days. 

A large number of volunteers and members of social organisations have been helping flood-affected families. Working almost round the clock for the last two days, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s fire brigade crew, disaster management department employees and the National Disaster Response Force jawans rescued a large number of people stranded in floodwaters and shifted them to temporary shelters.

Pune District Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil visited flood-affected people in Sangvi on Tuesday. He was accompanied by Mayor Rahul Jadhav, Minister of State for Rehabilitation Sanjay Bhegade and Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar. Over 900 flood-affected people have been shifted at the civic body’s Ahilyadevi School.
