NEW DELHI: The rape of the 21-year-old JNU student by a cab driver on Friday allegedly took place behind a bus stop on Nelson Mandela Marg, the same area where journalist Soumya Vishwanathan and call centre executive Jigisha Ghosh were attacked.
In her statement to police, the survivor said that after she boarded the cab on Mandir Marg, the driver offered her a spiked drink and she started feeling dizzy after consuming it. After reaching Nelson Mandela Marg, instead of taking a left towards JNU, he drove straight towards Vasant Kunj. He stopped the car between two bus stops 10 metres apart, a short distance from a police station, pushed his seat back, pulled the woman towards him and pressed himself against her.
The student said she slapped him and managed to open the car door and step out. She then started running towards Vasant Vihar, but the driver caught up with her and grabbed her by the hair. He then removed her bottomwear, tied it on her face and raped her behind one of the bus stops.
The survivor told a magistrate that she walked to Vasant Kunj police station and tried to narrate her ordeal, but the policemen insisted that she go back to her hostel and return the next day. A policewoman present there allegedly refused to accompany her when she asked them to drop her. She then kept walking until she reached Rose Garden, where she hid behind a bush till Saturday. She recalled passersby and auto drivers passing lewd remarks at her while she was walking in a disheveled state.

She also told the magistrate that she had gone to Mandir Marg to visit a Buddhist temple and had left her phone in the hostel. That’s why she had to take the help of a passerby to book the cab. Police zeroed in on the crime spot based on the survivor’s statement. They have asked all cab companies to share details of their vehicles active near Nelson Mandela Marg on the day of the crime.
Meanwhile, a delegation of National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday met Delhi Police and urged them to take strict action against the cab driver. Police assured NCW that stern action will be taken against the accused. “Investigation into the matter is on and police have assured that the commission will be updated regularly about developments in the case,” an NCW official told PTI.
