BOSTON --- Steven Wright became the second Red Sox pitcher in as many days to receive a platelet-rich plasma injection in his ailing right elbow.

Wright visited renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday in Florida. Boston’s knuckleballer experienced pain in the joint while playing catch during his recovery work at the club’s spring training home in Fort Myers and reported the issue to the club.

“Hopefully he can bounce back sooner rather than later,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “Let’s see where it takes us – if he can come back this year.”

Wright was rehabbing a right toe injury after being hit by a Max Muncy comebacker in a July game against the Dodgers. He’s also had left knee troubles over the past two seasons after undergoing a cartilage restoration procedure. Two suspensions – one for a domestic assault arrest, one for a positive performance enhancing drug test – have cost Wright a total of 95 games in 2018 and 2019.

“When he tried to play catch he felt it again, and it’s been a long time without him trying,” Cora said. “That’s why we took a look at this.”

Heath Hembree had an injection Tuesday and remains with the club in Boston. Timetables for Wright and Hembree to return are both undetermined.
