KOLKATA: It may be true that ‘there’s no
smoke without fire’ but not all smoke is emitted from faulty equipment under rakes, Metro commuters realised at the Shyambazar station on Tuesday evening. Staff at the station went on full alert after the Metro control room received a frantic call from a passenger in an AC rake that had started from Belgachhia.
“The whole coach is filling-up with smoke. People are choking. It seems there is a fire under the coach,” the passenger informed the control room at 7.03 pm. The Shyambazar station, the next stop for the Kavi Subhash-bound train, was immediately alerted and station staff, including RPF personnel with fire extinguishers positioned themselves on the platform.
The caller had mentioned the third coach from the front and panic-stricken passengers started rushing out as soon as the doors opened. When station staff managed to enter, they did smell smoke inside. But, no portion of the rake seemed to be on fire. Their eyes then fell on a bag next to a passenger. The passenger seemed to be in a state of
panic himself and didn’t even check to see where the smoke was coming from. “When the bag was opened, a
mobile phone was found inside. There seems to have been a short-circuit of some kind and dense smoke was being emitted by the handset. The man was taken aside by the RPF but managed to leave the station in the prevailing confusion. We would have certainly taken action against him for carelessness had he not escaped,” Metro Railway CPRO Indrani Banerjee said.
